What You Need to Know About Driveway Excavation

Whether you’re building a new driveway from scratch or replacing a tired old slab, proper excavation is the step that makes or breaks the final result. Cut corners in this first critical step and you’ll pay for it later, with cracking, sinking, and costly repairs.

Driveway Excavation Gold Coast

Why excavation matters more than you think.

A driveway is only as good as what’s beneath it. Without the right depth of excavation, compacted base layers, and proper drainage, even the most expensive surface will begin to fail within a few years.

Excavation removes unsuitable material and creates a stable, level platform for your driveway base. It also sets up the correct fall for stormwater drainage, which is especially important here in SouthEast Qld where heavy summer downpours are part of life.

Tip: In southeast Queensland, the soil profile can vary significantly between suburbs…From sandy coastal soils to expansive clay further inland. Getting the depth and base material right for your specific site is critical.

Driveway prep excavation

The driveway excavation process, step by step:

01 Site assessment & marking out

We work with your driveway construction crew to assess the existing ground conditions, check for underground services, and mark out the driveway boundaries and falls before any machine touches the ground.

02 Excavation

Using the right machinery for the job, mini excavator for tight residential sites or larger equipment for bigger driveways, we remove existing material to the required depth (determined by your builder).

03 Spoil removal

All excavated material is either kept on site or can be loaded and carted away for additional fees. We leave a clean site, not a pile of dirt for you to deal with.

04 Sub-base preparation

The excavated surface is shaped to correct falls, trimmed to level, and rolled to ensure a firm, stable base before any road base or bedding material goes in.

05 Base layer installation

Suitable road base material is placed and compacted (by builder) in layers to achieve the correct bearing capacity for your chosen driveway surface, whether that’s concrete, asphalt, or pavers.

How deep does a driveway need to be excavated?

Excavation depth depends on your soil type and your chosen surface material. The depth amount needs to be advised by your driveway construction crew, and this is what we will work to. As a general guide for residential driveways:

Concrete driveway: 150–200mm total depth (sub-base + slab)

Asphalt driveway: 200–300mm total depth (sub-base + asphalt)

Pavers: 200–300mm (sub-base + bedding sand + paver)

Poor or clay soils: Additional depth or geotextile fabric required

These are starting points only. A proper site assessment will determine the right depth and base specification for your specific ground conditions.

What about drainage?

Drainage is non-negotiable. A driveway that pools water causes more problems than just a muddy car; it undermines your base, accelerates surface cracking, and can direct water toward your home’s foundations.

During excavation we plan and shape the fall of the driveway to direct water toward the street, a garden bed, or a proper drainage pit. Where needed, your driveway builder may also suggest agi-pipe or strip drains as part of the base preparation work.

Old driveway removal

If you’re replacing an existing concrete or asphalt driveway, demolition and removal comes first. We can break up and cart away the old surface, then assess the sub-base beneath; often the existing base material can be reused or improved, saving cost on imported material.

Getting it right the first time

Driveway excavation looks straightforward but done poorly it creates headaches that are expensive to fix after the fact. The right machinery, the right depth, the right compaction, and the right drainage fall make all the difference to the longevity of your driveway.

At Coast 2 Coast Earthmoving, we handle residential and commercial driveway excavation across Southeast Queensland and surrounding areas. We bring the right equipment for the job — no oversized machines tearing up your yard, no underpowered equipment dragging the job out.
