Choosing the Right Excavator Size: A Practical Guide to Knowing what Machine Size you need

Choosing the right excavator for your project is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, whether you’re a homeowner planning a backyard upgrade or a site manager overseeing a commercial job. The wrong size machine can slow down progress, increase costs, and make simple tasks unnecessarily difficult… Size matters more than you think! First things first, the “T” when referencing excavator sizes means Tonnes, so 3T is a 3Tonne machine.

The type of project will determine the excavator size, so there’s a number of questions you’ll need to ask yourself. Let’s dig in (pun intended!)

1. What is the site access?

Access is a huge contributing factor to the size of machine you will be able to use. Homeowners will need to consider the width of any gates or pathways, and for builders/commercial use, consider what existing structures or scaffolding may be impeding access.

Typical access widths:

  • 1T–2T mini excavators: Fit through spaces as narrow as 950mm. Great for backyards, tight sides of houses, and small landscaping projects.

  • 3–8T excavators: Need roughly 1.5–2.5m access. Ideal for bigger yards, pools, or larger digs.

  • 8–30T: For substantial cuts, bulk excavations, boulder retaining walls, and house pads; you’ll likely need open site access. They range from 2.5m – 3.5m wide.

2. How much Material do you need to move?

The second biggest factor in choosing the right excavator size is volume.

For small loads 1 – 3T excavators will easily handle:

  • Trenching for pipes, small garden beds or garden projects, stump holes

For medium loads,  3 – 5T excavators are perfect for:

  • Retaining wall footings, pool digs, general site cuts, driveway prep, site clearing, general site works for new builds or site cleans.

For heavy-duty work you’ll want something in the 8T – 30T range.

  • Large commercial cuts, bulk earthworks, deep trenches, house pad prep

Rule of thumb:
If you’re moving a lot of material, a bigger excavator saves hours, sometimes even days, and reduces your hire cost.

3. What are the ground conditions? (soil, clay, rock, hard fill, concrete)

For soft soil: All sizes will work. Even a mini excavator can dig deep in clean, soft dirt.

For clay: Clay is heavy and sticky, so a stronger machine with more breakout force is ideal. For this, you will likely need 3T and above.

For rock or hard ground: This is where size really matters.

Questions we hear all the time:

  • “Can a 2T dig through rock?” … Usually no, not efficiently.

  • “Do I need a rock breaker?” … Possibly.

  • “How long will it take to get through shale?”… Depends on the machine + attachment.

In rocky conditions, a 5T–14T machine with a hydraulic rock breaker is often the safest option. When digging through rock, it’s almost always worth going up a size.

4. Attachments Matter (Just as Much as Machine Size)

Choosing the right machine is only half the job, many people don’t realise that the attachments are just as important… Do you need to move any rocks or logs? Are you looking to dig post holes for a fence? Do you need “Detailed Excavation” to finish off your commercial dig? The right attachment can turn a full day’s work to a few hours. We need to know what attachments you need at the time of booking.
Here are some of the common attachments:

Buckets (various sizes)

  • Trenching buckets, Mud buckets, GP buckets (general purpose), Batter buckets… Matching the bucket size to the job is crucial for efficiency.

Augers

  • For post holes, footings, fencing, retaining walls, pergolas, decks etc.

Rock Breakers / Hammers

  • Essential for breaking: Rock, Concrete, Hard ground, Driveway removal etc.

Grabs

  • Perfect for: Landscaping projects with heavy objects, Demolition, Moving sleeper posts or rocks, site cleans (tree removal etc)

Compaction Wheels

  • Speeds up backfilling and trench compaction, common on commercial jobs and subdivisions.
